Michigan State ends season with mixed emotions

Posted on: March 25th, 2012 by

Michigan State‘s surprisingly successful season ended with a thud.

The Spartans started the season unranked, then accomplished enough to be a top-seeded team in the NCAA tournament. They advanced to the round of 16 for the 10th time in 15 years, but ended with perhaps their poorest performance of the season.

Louisville sent Michigan State home with a 57-44 win Thursday night in the West Regional semifinals.

“It’s hard to feel good and hard to feel bad,” Spartans coach Tom Izzo said. “It’s hard to feel good because I don’t think we had anybody that played at all like they played in the last three weeks. But it’s hard to feel bad because Louisville deserved it.”

Michigan State entered the game on a roll, winning three games to earn the Big Ten tournament title and its first two games in the NCAA tournament.

The Spartans saved their worst for last. They made just 29 percent of their shots overall and got outrebounded by the Cardinals, whose zone defense slowed down a previously effective offense.

“We thought we was pretty well prepared for it,” forward Draymond Green said. “It’s not our coaches’ fault. I think they gave us a great game plan. At the end of the day, players play, and we didn’t, we just didn’t execute well.”

Green, though, did for much of the season.

The do-it-all forward was chosen the Big Ten player of the year, the conference tournament’s most outstanding player and broke Greg Kelser’s school record for career rebounds.

Green is graduating this spring, leaving the program with a big void on and off the court. The Spartans also will be without departing seniors Austin Thornton and Brandon Wood.

Michigan State returns a solid nucleus of players, including point guard Keith Appling, centers Derrick Nix and Adreian Payne along with guard Branden Dawson, whose freshman season was cut short by a left knee injury. Dawson has had surgery and hopes to be ready to join the team for preseason practices next fall.

The Spartans have a highly touted recruiting class, including two of the top in-state players, Bay City’s Matt Costello, who won the Mr. Basketball award and runner-up Denzel Valentine of Lansing, along with Gary Harris, who was recognized as the top player in Indiana, and Ohio’s Kenny Kaminski.

Michigan State won the Big Ten title for the third time in four years, claimed the conference tournament championship for the first time since 2000 and advanced to the NCAA‘s round of 16 for the 10th time in 15 years.

For the first time in four NCAA tournaments as a No. 1 seed, Izzo didn’t guide the Spartans to at least four wins to reach the national semifinals. His record fell to 7-3 in the round of 16, and he wasn’t happy about preparations for the first regional semifinal with just three days off.

The team flew to Arizona on Monday night, a day after beating Saint Louis, to prepare for Louisville.

“I think I made some mistakes, too, I really do,” Izzo said. “I’d never come out on a Monday again. I think we needed more time (in East Lansing). It was just a weird situation for us.

Michigan State started the season in an unusual position, not ranked in The Associated Press preseason poll. The Spartans had just two players ? Green and Appling ? who averaged double digits in minutes last year.

After setbacks in showcase games against North Carolina on an aircraft carrier and to Duke in New York, the Spartans won 15 straight, including at Gonzaga, against Indiana and at Wisconsin. They then lost three of five in January and rallied with a seven-game winning streak that gave them a piece of the Big Ten title. They ended up sharing it by closing the regular season with two straight losses.

Izzo and his players overcame the loss of standout Dawson at the Big Ten tournament in wins over Ohio State, Wisconsin and Iowa and with two victories in the NCAA tournament.

“We had a special year,” Thornton said. ” We know we did some things at Michigan State that haven’t been done in a long time

“Our ultimate goal was to make it to New Orleans to the Final Four. We weren’t able to accomplish that.”

Izzo said no one played well, or coached well, in the finale.

“We grew together, we won together, we had fun together, we cried together,” he said. “You couldn’t even look at one guy or blame one guy; collectively we just didn’t get it done.”

MF Global exec says Corzine ordered $200M transfer

Posted on: March 24th, 2012 by

(AP) ? A former MF Global executive is contradicting testimony from Jon Corzine, saying the former senator ordered the transfer of $200 million last fall out of a customer account days before the firm collapsed, according to an email obtained by congressional investigators.

Edith O’Brien, the former assistant treasurer, says Corzine ordered the money shifted to one of the firm’s bank accounts overseas on Oct. 28 to cover an overdraft, according to a memo that cited the e-mail.

The email noted that the transfer was made “per JC’s direct instructions.”

MF Global filed for bankruptcy protection on Oct. 31. The firm failed because of a disastrous bet on European debt. About $1.6 billion of customers’ money hasn’t been recovered.

A House Financial Services subcommittee released the memo Friday in advance of a hearing Wednesday. O’Brien has been subpoenaed to testify. The Associated Press could not reach her for comment.

In December, Corzine told the panel: “I did not instruct anyone to lend customer funds to MF Global or any of its affiliates.” Corzine also told the subcommittee he didn’t know about “the use of customer funds on any loan or transfer.”

And Corzine told a Senate panel two days earlier: “I never gave any instruction to anyone at MF Global to misuse customer funds.”

A representative for Corzine didn’t immediately return a telephone call seeking comment.

Client money is required by law to be held separately from a brokerage firm’s cash to protect investors in case a firm fails. If MF Global misused client money, it would violate a fundamental investor protection for people who trade options and futures.

Many lawmakers have heard from farmers, ranchers and small business owners in their states who are missing money that was deposited with the firm. Agricultural businesses use brokerage firms like MF Global to help reduce their risks in an industry vulnerable to swings in oil, corn and other commodity prices.

Corzine, a former New Jersey governor and U.S. senator from the state, led MF Global until early November. He testified before three congressional panels in December. He said he didn’t become aware of the shortfall in customer money until hours before MF Global’s bankruptcy filing.

No one has been charged in the MF Global case. In addition to Congress, federal regulators and a federal grand jury in Chicago are investigating.

It is very special when your thoughts can be brought to real life in some type of home design. When you are able to make one of your own thoughts a reality, the feeling can be very fulfilling. Most small home improvement tasks are not as overwhelming as they may seem. Then you can save a lot since you will not need to hire out for professional craft services. Working with electrical wiring is something that needs to be handled by an experienced electrician. By hiring an electrician to do the work initially; by avoiding potential disaster, you will actually have saved money in the long run.

Homes that have more than one story frequently will have a rather general sort of railing for their stairs. You may usually see a very standard type of metal railing on most of these. Of course this project will ultimately be swapping the tedious railings with some with a little more character. By surfing the web you will see a variety of railings that can enhance the look of your home. The different types of wood these railings are made of are endless. These railings will likely be more intricate, with more detail than a general type of railing. After viewing what is available, the old style railings will not look suitable any longer. After you have changed your electrical outlet covers to something more appealing, you can do even more and here is how. By trimming up the throughways and doorways, you can instant appeal to your home interior. Your home will benefit greatly from an aesthetic point of view by doing this low-cost and fun filled project. Adding a wood trim to these areas is a great way to improve the way that it looks. An additional way to improve your homes interior is to remove the existing base trim at the same time. These projects are very easy to do, and you will just be using the appropriate nails to secure them in place.

If you live in a cooler region, then here is a simple home improvement project that will keep you warm. This project involves installing a heat lamp in the ceiling of your bathroom, plus a separate light switch for the control. You will use this to keep you warm when you step out of the shower or bath.

This type of comfort-related improvement is not as expensive as you may think. This lamp can be nearly effortless to install, along with wiring to expanded electrical switch housing. You wont ever want to be without one, after you feel the warmth of it upon stepping out of the shower on a cold winter night.

In reality, we pretty fond of the eating bar home improvement idea, as it will create a more open space and make the room feel bigger. This may seem like a large and strenuous task, although as you have just read there really isnt much to it. That is always the way it appears, things around the house often sound demanding. Simplifying things starts with leaning more and gaining self-reliance.

Looking for property management? Already know the value of hiring property management for your real estate, rental homes and rental property?so that you can focus your efforts on getting rental tenants into your rental property? So, what?s the next step? How do you find reliable and detail oriented property management? Here are some points you may want to think about in selecting your Tuscon property management:

First, you?ve got to know what the costs are for property management. If you?re going to make a profit on your real estate rental property and rental homes you?ve got to know the costs the property management will take from your income. Property management fees range from four percent to twelve percent of the rent income. The percentage of property management fees will depend upon the real estate property itself. The lower percentage will be for larger rental property real estate, the larger percentages for one or two rental homes for example. Make sure that your property management choice is very clear and straight forward about the property management fees.

Second, before you choose a property management team, look at other rental property that they manage. See what their property management looks like from the outside on the work they already do. Also, the benefit of this is to see if they are experienced in property management of property that is similar to your property. If they only have property management customers that have professional real estate, you may not want to select them to manage family home rental property because they?re not experienced in your property type.

Third, know whose really going to be doing the property management for your real estate and rental homes. You?re probably working the property management deal with the salesman or the property management business managers who hire the people who actually do the property management. Also, make sure that the property management team always has the same person doing your property management so that they know what?s going on with the rental homes and what has been done previously. If you have a different person doing your property management every time this could leave you at a disadvantage, especially if you have rental homes.

Fourth, after you know the fees and costs of the basic property management, make sure you know what extra fees there are. What are the costs in circumstances that you may not anticipate, for example what is their property management fee for eviction costs or other legal things that tend to come up with rental homes and rental real estate property.

Don?t only know what the fees are, but find out what the time-line is on when those property management fees have to be paid. And how are those property management fees paid. Are they automatic deductions? Or do extra fees and regular property management fees come due every month or quarterly?

If your property management will include advertising and marketing, know what the property management will do for advertising and how much the advertising will cost on the property management bill.

Seventh, other fees may include rental homes or rental unit preparation. When there?s a vacant rental until or rental homes, what are the cleaning costs and how much longer before the property management will have another rental tenant in.

There are more details you?ll want to work out with a property management company, but this is a start. Property Management Checklist

Third, know whose really going to be doing the property management for your real estate and rental homes. You?re probably working the property management deal with the salesman or the property management?. Learn more at Property Management Tucson and Property Management Tucson

Saints’ Payton suspended for season by NFL

Posted on: March 22nd, 2012 by

The NFL handed down sweeping and unprecedented punishment Wednesday for bounties paid out on big hits, suspending New Orleans Saints coach Sean Payton without pay for next season and indefinitely banning the team’s former defensive coordinator, Gregg Williams, who now works for the St. Louis Rams.

Payton is the first head coach suspended by the league for any reason. He is accused of trying to cover up a system of extra cash payouts that NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell called “particularly unusual and egregious” and “totally unacceptable.”

“We are all accountable and responsible for player health and safety and the integrity of the game. We will not tolerate conduct or a culture that undermines those priorities,” said Goodell, whose league faces more than 20 concussion-related lawsuits brought by hundreds of former players. “No one is above the game or the rules that govern it.”

According to the league, Payton ignored instructions from the NFL and Saints ownership to make sure bounties weren’t being paid. The league also chastised him for choosing to “falsely deny that the program existed,” and for attempting to “encourage the false denials by instructing assistants to ‘make sure our ducks are in a row.’”

Goodell also banned Saints general manager Mickey Loomis for the first eight regular-season games next season, and assistant coach Joe Vitt for the first six games.

In addition, Goodell fined the Saints $500,000 and took away their second-round draft picks this year and next.

After the NFL first made its investigation public on March 2, Williams admitted to ? and apologized for ? running the program while in charge of the Saints’ defense from 2009-11. He was hired by the Rams in January.

Goodell will review Williams’ status after the upcoming season and decide whether he can return to the league.

The Saints now must decide who will coach the team while Payton is barred, his suspension is effective April 1, and who will make roster moves while Loomis is out.

After the NFL made clear that punishments were looming, Payton and Loomis took the blame for violations that they acknowledged “happened under our watch” and said Saints owner Tom Benson “had nothing to do” with the bounty pool, which reached as much as $50,000 in 2009, the season the Saints won the Super Bowl.

Saints quarterback Drew Brees reacted quickly to the news on Twitter, writing: “I am speechless. Sean Payton is a great man, coach, and mentor … I need to hear an explanation for this punishment.”

The NFL said the scheme involved 22 to 27 defensive players; targeted opponents included quarterbacks Aaron Rodgers, Cam Newton, Brett Favre and Kurt Warner. “Knockouts” were worth $1,500 and “cart-offs” $1,000, with payments doubled or tripled for the playoffs.

According to the league, Saints defensive captain Jonathan Vilma offered $10,000 to any player who knocked then-Vikings QB Favre out of the 2010 NFC championship game.

All payouts for specific performances in a game, including interceptions or causing fumbles, are against NFL rules. The NFL warns teams against such practices before each season, although in the aftermath of the revelations about the Saints, current and former players from various teams talked about that sort of thing happening frequently ? although not on the same scale as the NFL found in New Orleans.

In a memo sent out to the NFL’s 32 teams, Goodell ordered owners to make sure their clubs are not offering bounties now. Each club’s principal owner and head coach must certify in writing by March 30 that no pay-for-performance system exists.

Punishment for any Saints players involved will be determined later, because the league is still reviewing the case with the NFL Players Association.

“While I will not address player conduct at this time, I am profoundly troubled by the fact that players ? including leaders among the defensive players ? embraced this program so enthusiastically and participated with what appears to have been a deliberate lack of concern for the well-being of their fellow players,” Goodell said.

The discipline for the Saints’ involvement in the bounty scheme is more far-reaching than what Goodell did in 2007, when the NFL came down on the New England Patriots for illegally videotaping an opponent. Goodell fined the Patriots $250,000, stripped a first-round draft pick, and docked their coach, Bill Belichick, $500,000 for what was known as “Spygate.”

As recently as this year, Payton said he was entirely unaware of the bounties ? “a claim contradicted by others,” the league said. And according to the investigation, Payton received an email before the Saints’ first game in 2011 that read, “PS Greg Williams put me down for $5000 on Rogers (sic).” When Payton was shown that email by NFL investigators, he acknowledged it referred to a bounty on Rodgers, whose Packers beat the Saints in Week 1.

The league said that in addition to contributing money to the bounty fund, Williams oversaw record-keeping, determined payout amounts and who got cash, and handed out envelopes with money to players. The NFL said Williams acknowledged he intentionally misled NFL investigators when first questioned in 2010, and didn’t try to stop the bounties.

Vitt was aware of the bounties and, according to the league, later admitted he had “fabricated the truth” when interviewed in 2010.

Loomis knew of the bounty allegations at least by February 2010, when he was told by the league to end the practice. But the NFL said he later admitted he didn’t do enough to determine if there were bounties or to try to stop them.

Tobacco plants turn into living vaccine factories

Posted on: March 22nd, 2012 by

Tobacco use is responsible for almost half a million deaths in the U.S. each year, but the tobacco plant could find redemption as a savior for public health. That’s because a U.S. biotechnology startup has transformed tobacco plants into living factories for making new vaccines and medical treatments.

The “SwiftVax” tobacco plants are designed to act as quick, cheap biological factories for churning out bioengineered proteins needed for human or animal vaccines. Faster vaccine manufacturing could allow the world to respond rapidly to future outbreaks of infectious diseases ? a problem it faced while racing to stockpile vaccine during the H1N1 swine flu pandemic.

“Thousands of lives and millions of dollars were lost because current technologies for production were not able to provide vaccines fast enough,” said Lucas Arzola, a Ph.D. candidate in chemical engineering at the University of California, Davis. “The use of tobacco plants as biofactories of vaccines can provide a solution to this problem.”

Arzola’s startup, called Inserogen, has already begun lining up bioengineered products made by the SwiftVax tobacco plants. First, it’s creating a vaccine for the poultry illness called Newcastle disease ? an infectious disease capable of rapidly spreading among chickens or other farm birds.

Second, a therapeutic protein called alpha-1 antitrypsin (AAT) could help human patients suffering from the genetic disorder known as AAT deficiency, because the missing protein typically protects the lungs and liver from damage. But Arzola envisions the SwiftVax technology making a wide variety of vaccines and proteins used in medical treatments.

“The technology is easy to customize, and can be engineered to produce not only vaccines, but virtually any recombinant protein,” Arzola told InnovationNewsDaily. “A unique aspect of our technology is that we are repurposing tobacco, a plant that is viewed as negative, for a positive purpose: manufacturing vaccines and therapeutics to improve quality of life.”

Arzola originally founded Inserogen alongside fellow Ph.D. candidates Oscar Ortega-Rivera and Michelle Lozada-Contreras, as well as Karen McDonald, a professor of chemical engineering at UC-Davis. Inserogen went on to win first place among 40 teams competing in the Big Bang! Business Plan Competition at UC Davis in 2010.

The startup’s breakthroughs have built upon years of funding from the U.S. National Science Foundation ? it was accepted into the new Innovation Corps Program that awards a $50,000 grant to university teams. More recently, it received a $20,000 E-Team Grant from the National Collegiate Inventors and Innovators Alliance (NCIIA) to do a proof-of-concept for producing an animal vaccine.

Inserogen will also represent one of 14 student teams participating in the NCIIA’s Open Minds exhibition being held at the Exploratorium museum in San Francisco on Friday, March 23. The startup team hopes to share tips with fellow entrepreneurs and perhaps find interested collaborators or investors.

Arzola had several tips for fellow entrepreneurs: build a team with complementary skills, don’t be afraid of talking about the startup idea, and get involved with supporting organizations such as NCIIA.

“You must seek advice from experienced individuals who have built a similar company or have commercialized a similar technology or product before,” Arzola said. “They have been there, done that, and you can learn a lot from their successes and mistakes. You will be surprised by their willingness to mentor and to provide valuable advice.”
